How to tackle SMED?

The application of the SMED method starts with a detailed diagnosis of the change in the workplace. Particular attention is paid to the succession of the various activities.
Each change can be divided into 4 groups of activities:
  • Preparation, functional control and aftercare.
  • Removal and installation of parts.
  • Centering, dimensional control and setting parameters.
  • Test run, adjust and finish

The  principle of SMED is based on it's philosophy, it is a philosophy by splitting the Changeover activities into two types:
  • activities that can only be carried out during the machine downtime ( internal or online changeover activities).
  • activities that can be performed when the installation is running ( external or offline changeover activities).
